Empowering Youth Through Youth-Led Research:

Saint Lucia ConnectEd's Transformative Journey

Saint Lucia ConnectEd Youth Researchers.

The Saint Lucia ConnectEd Youth-Led Research Initiative is a beacon of hope and change. Its primary aim is to empower young researchers to drive educational advancements and change within their communities. Fifteen enthusiastic individuals from diverse communities in Saint Lucia are at the forefront of this movement. They're undergoing comprehensive training in participatory action research, data collection, and analysis, preparing them to be the changemakers of tomorrow.

As we delve deeper into the Action Research Process, it's evident that these youth researchers are not just passive participants. They're leading the charge, conducting observations and interviews, and playing a pivotal role in the research process. Reflection is a cornerstone of this initiative, with youth guiding teachers to introspect on their practices while also evaluating their own research experiences. The culmination of this process is data analysis, where the youth harness their descriptive statistics skills to draw meaningful conclusions.

What sets this initiative apart is its Novelty and Impact. This is a groundbreaking venture in Saint Lucia, marking the first time young individuals play such a significant role in assessing the impact of an educational project. It's not just about research; it's about youth lending their voices to a national initiative, making them key actors in shaping the future.

Under the expert guidance of Royston Emmanuel and Gilda Marcion from the ConnectEd team, the youth are exposed to engaging, positive youth development-rooted methodologies. These methodologies are not just theoretical but inspire real-world learning and action.

The journey includes a series of Training Workshops and Retreats. It began with a virtual orientation, setting the stage by elucidating the purpose, structure, and training modality. This was followed by in-person sessions at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, where the youth were introduced to the nuances of the ConnectEd framework, positive youth development, and research methodologies.

A significant milestone in their journey was the introduction to the Digital Skills Competency Framework, DigCom 2.2 LC. This wasn't just a theoretical exercise. The youth delved deep into enhancing their digital proficiency, understanding its real-world applications, especially in the realm of education. They were also trained in various research instruments, from questionnaires to observation checklists and interviews.

As the program progressed, the focus shifted to Finalizing the Research Proposal. The youth were meticulously guided to articulate clear problem statements, craft specific research questions, and ensure these questions aligned perfectly with the appropriate research instruments.

But the real magic began in the Data Collection and Collaboration phase. The youth researchers collaborated with teachers across the island, immersing themselves in data collection. This hands-on experience was invaluable, allowing them to apply their training to real-world scenarios, fostering meaningful relationships, and facilitating a mutual exchange of insights.

In a world where youth engagement is paramount for sustainable development, the ConnectEd's Youth-Led Research initiative in Saint Lucia stands as a beacon of hope. It's not just about research; it's about shaping the future of education, one young researcher at a time.
